Autumn 1992
This issue turns to the ethical and spiritual conduct that defines the Sufi path. In his discourse, The Etiquette and Ethics of the Sufis, Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh outlines the virtues of fairness, humility, kindness, and truthfulness as the marks of authentic Sufis. The articles probe foundational questions of Sufi thought — from William C. Chittick on Adam’s fall, to Annemarie Schimmel on Abo’l-Hosayn an-Nuri, to Herbert Mason on Hallaj and the Baghdad School, and Leonard Lewisohn on annihilation in ‘Ayno’l-Qodhāt’s Tamhidat. Stories and poetry complement these studies, weaving themes of surrender, love, and remembrance into a wider reflection on how the Sufi way is lived in practice.
