Sufi Journal Issue 19

Table of Contents

Autumn 1993
This issue gathers studies and reflections on love’s unifying work in Sufism—spanning the imaginal realm, spiritual guidance, the transformative practice of dhikr, and the code of chivalry—alongside narratives and poems that remember the Beloved. In his discourse, Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh presents love as the experiential path to realize the Unity of Being, showing how sincere love dissolves divisions and unveils one Reality. The essays consider “imaginal men” (William C. Chittick), Rumi’s spiritual guides (Terry Graham), dhikr as an archetype of transformation (Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee), and Sufi chivalry in the life of Abu Sa‘id Abe’l-Khayr (Mohammad Ali Jamnia); the narratives “The Vision of a Friend” and “The Rainbow Legend of Turtle Island” echo love’s presence in everyday life; and the poetry by Annemarie Schimmel, Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh, Herbert Mason, Abid Mohiuddin, and Merida Blanco calls the reader back to remembrance.
