Sufi Journal Issue 23

Table of Contents

Autumn 1994
This issue explores attraction, expression, and divine will as dimensions of the seeker’s path toward God. In his discourse, Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh distinguishes divine attraction (jazba) from social conduct (suluk), showing that only those who move from attraction into disciplined service can guide others. Essays trace the ineffable language of mystical experience, the love of Abu Bakr Shibli, the operation of will and destiny, and Akbar’s spiritual world order. Stories and poems illuminate friendship, devotion, and the intoxication of love. In the Old Wine in New Bottles piece, adapted from Rumi’s Mathnavi, a talkative parrot’s misfortune teaches that heedless anger destroys the very blessings it once enjoyed.
