Sufi Journal – Issue 40

Sufi Journal Issue 40

Table of Contents

Winter 1998–99
This issue reflects on the dangers of false mastery and the inner work required to cultivate sincerity, light, and healing within the Sufi path. In his discourse, Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh warns against the snares of the nafs and the misuse of spiritual authority, calling seekers back to remembrance, service, and love. Essays turn inward to the interior life, epiphanies of light, Kabir’s songs, and Ahmad Ghazali’s legacy, joined by reflections on wholeness and healing, while a narrative of island solitude deepens these meditations. Poetry gathers translations from Ghalib and Rumi with new work by Mark Nepo, Herbert Mason, John Maney Jr., and Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh, closing the issue in devotion and clarity. In the Old Wine section, an adaptation from Rumi’s Fihi ma Fihi (“In It What Is In It”) tells the story of a lost traveler and the generosity he receives, warning against envy and reminding that outward appearances may seem bitter at first but true sustenance lies in patience and inner truth.
